Admitting that you, or someone you care about has a chemical-dependency problem isn’t easy. How do you know when drinking or drugs have gotten out of hand? The answer varies, but generally, if the usage of alcohol or drugs interferes with family and social life, work, health, emotional stability and/or spiritual life—chemical dependency is a problem. Chemical dependency affects individuals from all walks of life. And tragically, it impacts the family, friends and co-workers of each dependent person. Chemical dependency is a disease that can not be helped by will power alone—it must be treated. The Alcohol and Drug Recovery Center can help.
The Alcohol and Drug Recovery Center (ADRC), a center of excellence at Cleveland Clinic, is based at Lutheran Hospital. ADRC offers the highest quality treatment and care for people who have an alcohol and/or drug dependency problem. We have successfully treated thousands of chemically dependent individuals.
Our Team Approach
The Cleveland Clinic ADRC provides a friendly yet professional team approach to the evaluation and treatment of chemical abuse or dependency. The ADRC offers state-of-the-art inpatient and outpatient treatment through a variety of programs to fit individual needs and schedules. ADRC programs are tailored to offer people a new, sober way of living, building long-term sobriety one day at a time. Our treatment programs emphasize:
- Understanding chemical dependency as a chronic condition.
- Recognition of triggers that lead to chemical misuse.
- Identifying symptoms of the illness.
- Realization of the consequences and potentially fatal outcome of chemical dependency.
- Detoxification and rehabilitation, if needed, under supervision by experienced doctors and nurses.

Starting the Process of Recovery
The first step to successful recovery often begins with an outpatient visit, including the completion of a comprehensive assessment. A thorough history and laboratory assessment of the patient is performed and an individualized course of treatment is designed by an experienced chemical dependence professional. Assessments are available for persons aged 18 and over.
We ask and assess if the use of drugs and/or alcohol:
- Is interfering with work, school or relationships with others.
- Is resulting in problems with the legal system.
- Represents a danger to one’s self or others.
- Represents a hazard to health.
- Is causing problems in any aspect of life to self or others.

The Alcohol and Drug Recovery Center directly supports Cleveland Clinic’s mission to provide world-class quality patient care in a setting of education and research. Patients are treated with dignity, kindness and compassion. The atmosphere is cheerful and hopeful; optimistic for a better tomorrow. The ADRC staff members are true professionals with the highest credentials and professional standards. Our professional team has amassed several hundred years of treatment experience while treating over 45,000 patients. We are mindful of cost, so the majority of our services are covered and included in many insurance plans. We are unified in our approach to helping patients confront and overcome their chemical and/or alcohol dependency, and to assist them in developing strategies for maintaining a chemical-free lifestyle to enhance their quality of life.
Our complete inpatient and outpatient services emphasize a restoration of health and total patient well-being. Based on highly individualized treatment planning, our comprehensive continuum of care incorporates medical and emotional recovery, as well as, traditional approaches to treatment. We weave modern behavioral science, using the disease model and Twelve-Step philosophy, with traditional components of compassion and understanding, all in an environment that fosters creative, personalized treatment strategies. All recovery services are provided under the care of psychiatrists who specialize in chemical abuse and dependency.
Cleveland Clinic's Alcohol and Drug Recovery Center (ADRC) is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) for the treatment of chemically dependent individuals. The ADRC is also accredited by the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS), the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
Programs Offered
Hospital Treatment
Inpatient treatment is often necessary for patients who need close medical supervision, detoxification and individualized attention to medical or psychiatric needs. Our patient-staff ratio allows for close medical supervision and individualized care.
Services offered:
- Psychiatric evaluation and treatment as needed.
- Medical evaluation and treatment as needed.
- 24-hour medical nursing supervision.
- Group therapy.
- Community self-help groups.
- Family educational sessions.
- 12-step treatment philosophy.
- Pastoral and nutritional services as needed.
- Complex medical issues.
- Dual diagnosis.
- Pregnant patients (less than 20 weeks gestation).
- Professional programs.
The Inpatient Detoxification Program is generally appropriate for patients requiring more intensive care. The majority of patients seen at the ADRC receive treatment on an outpatient basis. The average inpatient length of stay for detoxification is 3.8 days. Ambulatory detoxification is offered to patients requiring medical supervision during withdrawal, but who do not need inpatient care. Ambulatory detox is usually offered in conjunction with day-time treatment.
Day Treatment Program
Patients who do not require the close medical and nursing attention of the Inpatient Treatment Program can enter the Day. Treatment Program.
Program elements include:
- Intense relapse prevention and recovery skills training.
- Healthy life skills development.
- Weekly treatment team meeting with staff psychiatrist.
- Daily self-help sessions.
Patients can enter Day Treatment immediately if detoxification is not required or outpatient detoxification is appropriate, as determined during initial outpatient assessment. Alternatively, patients may enter Day Treatment once inpatient treatment is complete. Day Treatment is also suggested for patients requiring a transitional phase between inpatient treatment and outpatient care. While the schedule of the Day Treatment Program is flexible, most patients attend the program for eight hours per day for an average of one to three weeks. The program is offered from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Parking is free. The group breaks for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. Group participants may pack a lunch for themselves, visit the Lutheran Hospital cafeteria, or visit a number of local restaurants, many within easy walking distance.
Patients completing Day Treatment often transition to one of the Intensive Outpatient Programs offered by the ADRC.
Intensive Outpatient Programs
The Intensive Outpatient Programs are for patients who understand that they are dependent on alcohol, or other substances, and have taken the initiative to seek treatment. Patients must commit to attending four to five weeks of treatment followed by six to eight weeks of weekly aftercare meetings.
Our four day, five week outpatient programs include:
- Four Day IOP – an intensive outpatient program designed for patients whose family and job responsibilities allow them to participate in morning treatment. The meetings are held 9 a.m. - noon, Monday through Thursday for five (5) weeks, followed by weekly aftercare.
- Evening IOP – an intensive outpatient program conducted in the evening thereby allowing patients to attend to job and family responsibilities during the day. Meetings are held Monday through Thursday, 6-9 p.m., for five (5) weeks, followed by weekly aftercare.
Daily (5 Days) Intensive Outpatient Program
The Daily Intensive Outpatient Program is focused on relapse prevention, re-integration into family and work environments and maintenance of sobriety. The Daily IOP is designed for patients who have completed detoxification for chemical dependency but continue to experience moderate difficulty functioning in social, academic, family and vocational settings. Daily IOP is especially designed for patients who may have terminated treatment more than once or who have repeatedly relapsed following treatment. Program activities are customized to meet individual patient needs. Patients attend the Daily IOP Monday through Friday 9 a.m. - noon for four (4) weeks, followed by weekly aftercare for at least eight weeks.
Family Program
Family involvement is a critical component of chemical dependency treatment to help families heal along with their loved one. The Family Program allows the spouse, children, significant other and extended family members of chemically-dependent people to recover together; encouraging new understandings and healthier attitudes toward the illness of chemical dependency. Family education activities focus on the nature of addiction, codependency, addictive family systems, and 12-step community support groups such as Al-Anon and Ala-Teen. The Family Group meets on Tuesdays, 6:30-8 p.m., at Lutheran Hospital. Interested family members may continue to attend the Family Group as long as they wish, regardless of how long the patient remains in treatment in the ADRC.

Recovery Groups
For groups of patients with similar backgrounds who have completed treatment at Cleveland Clinic or elsewhere, our Recovery Groups offer support and advanced recovery skills training from others who have had similar experiences. Aftercare groups help members continue to develop their relapse prevention and coping skills and strengthen the positive impact of treatment.

Some of our Recovery Groups include:
- Medical Professionals Group
Provides group therapy for healthcare providers whose work has been compromised by their chemical dependency. This Group includes intensive psychotherapy to enhance professional performance as well as advocacy with licensing boards, employers and family members to secure the restoration of full professional responsibilities. This Group is approved as Aftercare by the State Medical Board of Ohio and many other state boards that license healthcare professionals. - Nurses in Recovery Group
Provides aftercare therapy specially focused on the particular needs of nurses in stable recovery. This Group includes monitoring and advocacy with the Ohio Board of Nursing as well as with employers and family members to secure the restoration of professional responsibilities and support the maintenance and growth of recovery skills. - Suboxone Support Group
Provides peer support for people on the medication-assisted treatment (MAT) of Buprenorphine. Offered to current and former patients of the ADRC.
Alumni & Recovery Volunteers Support
We have a large and active group of Clinic Ambassador Volunteers who have contributed thousands of hours in sharing the help and hope they have experienced in recovery. These dedicated individuals work without pay to inspire and support new people coming to the ADRC.
Our ADRC alumni volunteers are people who have been there, who have experienced the personal agony of addiction or alcoholism, and who have turned their lives in the direction of health, healing and recovery. They also form our bridge to our phenomenal self-help community, one of the oldest and largest in the nation. Our recovering volunteers form a critically important “link in the chain of recovery” as they understand what it’s like to be in the shoes of those who are still suffering, and they demonstrate every day that recovery is within the grasp of anyone who truly and willingly seeks it.
Our Doctors
Our specialists are committed to providing World Class Care in a compassionate setting, so we have assembled perhaps the strongest treatment team found anywhere. Working together full-time, the ADRC interdisciplinary team of specialists includes board-certified psychiatrists, specially trained and licensed registered nurses, and certified professional counselors. The team works closely with psychologists, registered dietitians, pastoral counselors and physical therapists to assess patient needs and develop personalized treatment plans. Our social services department can provide referrals to community resources for additional help as needed. Sophisticated and close laboratory monitoring for drugs of abuse is a key component of care in the ADRC to assure and document program compliance. Financial counselors are available to help with questions about insurance coverage.
